Peregian's coffee scene is small in the way that good things often are. Three cafés carry the village, each with a temperament of its own. The right move is not to pick one — it's to try all three before the week is out.
Hand of Fatima
The most polished of the three. Middle Eastern-leaning brunch menu — labneh, shakshuka, spiced eggs — and a beautifully made single-origin filter. Get there early on weekends. Ideal for the third-day breakfast when someone finally wants to sit somewhere with a menu.
Best for: a slow weekend breakfast, filter coffee, an unhurried table for four.
Outer Square
The village workhorse. Sharp coffee, quick service, a small food menu, tables spilling onto the green. Locals hover here between 7 and 9 am, and it is the closest thing Peregian has to a daily gathering. Order at the counter, wave at someone you know, take it to a bench.
Best for: a weekday morning coffee, a takeaway before the beach, meeting anyone under the age of forty.
Salty Mermaid
The newest addition. Bright, coastal, easy pace. Good acai bowls, honest sandwiches, dogs and children equally welcome. The kind of place you stop at on the way back from a morning swim and stay longer than you meant to.
Best for: post-beach breakfast, smoothies with children, a quiet second coffee at ten.
The smaller stops
- The bakery on the green — pies, pastries, and a queue that moves fast.
- Peregian Beach Hotel — good filter and a garden bar if you'd rather your coffee at eleven.
- Coolum Beach cafés — a ten-minute drive south if you want a change.
Someone always finds the coffee before anyone else finds their phone.
Making it at home
Villa Villa Coola's kitchen is set up for the morning coffee ritual — an espresso machine, a grinder, a French press, and beans available at Outer Square by the bag. Some mornings the walk into the village wins. Some mornings the rooftop wins. See the rooftop for why.
For where to eat once the coffee is done, see the restaurant guide. For the full village, Peregian Beach.
